Edouard Mendy’s shocking error helped a relentless Leeds side beat Chelsea 3-0 at Elland Road in one of their most impressive displays since returning to the Premier League.
Goals from Brenden Aaronson, Rodrigo Moreno and Jack Harrison made sure Jesse Marsch’s first full season in England continued at a stunning pace, leaving Chelsea with all sorts of problems.
An historic rivalry was reignited in 2020 when the Whites returned to the top flight after a 16-year absence, but the Blues had been able to keep their opponents at arm’s length with three simple wins from four.
That all changed in their fifth meeting though, with the help of a shocking error from Mendy in the 33rd minute.
The Senegalese goalkeeper dallied on a clearance only to be chased down by pressing machine Aaronson who dispossessed the keeper for an easy tap-in.
“What are you doing, Edouard Mendy?!” Micky Gray said on commentary on talkSPORT.
“It was a simple clearance, he’s done it two or three times already this game but he gets caught on the ball by the star player of this game so far, Brenden Aaronson what an absolutely outstanding talent, 21-year-old from the United States he picks the ball off Mendy slots it into the back of the net won’t score an easier goal.”
The Premier League’s top scorer, Rodrigo, then sent a pinpoint header past Mendy for a 2-0 lead at half-time, but a Chelsea comeback would have been expected.

However, Leeds continued how they left off in the second period, with a brilliant team goal tapped in by Harrison to end the clash with 69 minutes played.
Summer recruit from Napoli, Kalidou Koulibaly, then compounded things for Thomas Tuchel with a second yellow card for wrapping his arms around Dan James, a game on from an impressive showing that saw the defender score against Tottenham.
The result leaves Chelsea with just one win from their opening three games as Tuchel struggles to get to grips with a tumultuous year, while Marsch appears to be emerging well from a tough one himself.
