The 112-cap Switzerland international captained his side in all four of their 2022 FIFA World Cup matches, only for his team to suffer a 6-1 defeat against Portugal in the last-16.

Xhaka’s four appearances took his cap tally up to 111, just seven shy of Heinz Hermann’s all-time national record of 118.

“Very proud to be named Switzerland player of the year. Big thanks for the support – it really means a lot,” he wrote on Instagram.

His teammates were quick to respond after hearing news of the 30-year-old’s award.

Oleksandr Zinchenko wrote: ‘congratulations brother’ and Thomas Partey added some heart and fire emojis.

Arsenal sporting director Edu also posted a top emoji, with clapping hands, whilst Pablo Mari, who is on loan at Monza from the Gunners, wrote: ‘What a player’.

Teammate Thomas Partey simply posted two fire emojis to highlight the kind of form he is in.

Xhaka has had an impressive calendar year for Arsenal, featuring in all but one of the Gunners’ league games last year.

The midfielder has started in all 19 league games this term as Mikel Arteta’s side sit atop the Premier League table.

His importance to the Gunners has grew further, ever since he was stripped of the armband by Arteta in November 2019.

Xhaka also played a vital role in his side’s 2-0 victory over Tottenham in the north London derby, and the 3-2 win against Manchester United last weekend.
