Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe was pleased with his team’s performance as they secured an emphatic 5-1 victory over West Ham United at the London Stadium. Howe described the match as “strange” and was delighted to see his players share the goals around. The result has increased the pressure on West Ham manager David Moyes, who has now seen his side lose five of their last six Premier League matches.
The match began with Newcastle taking the lead after just three minutes, when Jonjo Shelvey’s free-kick was headed in by defender Ciaran Clark. West Ham responded quickly, with Jesse Lingard equalising just four minutes later. However, Newcastle then took control of the match and regained the lead through a Joelinton header in the 21st minute.
The Magpies then added two more goals before half-time, with Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson both finding the back of the net. Newcastle added a fifth goal in the second half, with Joe Willock scoring his first goal for the club. The result was a huge boost for Newcastle, who have now won three of their last four Premier League matches.
Speaking after the match, Howe said: “It was a strange game. We started well and got the early goal, but then West Ham equalised quickly. We then took control of the game and it was good to see us share the goals around.” He added: “It’s been a difficult season for us, but this result will give us a huge confidence boost going into our next match.”
West Ham’s defeat leaves them in 16th place in the Premier League table, just two points above the relegation zone. The result will add further pressure on Moyes, who is now facing an uphill battle to keep his side in the top flight.
