West Ham head into tonight’s Europa Conference League final against Fiorentina knowing they are potentially just 90 minutes away from history. The Hammers fell agonisingly close to ending their long wait since their last trophy in the Europa League semi-finals last year when they were beaten by eventual winners Eintracht Frankfurt. This evening’s final in Prague will therefore represent a shot at redemption, but they will be mindful of the challenges posed by a Fiorentina side who finished eighth in Serie A last season. So, when exactly was the last time West Ham won a trophy? West Ham’s last major trophy was the FA Cup in 1979/80. They edged out London rivals Arsenal with a 1-0 victory in the final at Wembley with the only goal of the game scored by Trevor Brooking. It was West Ham’s third title in the competition following on from victories in 1963/64 and 1974/75. Their only other domestic trophy is the shared FA Community Shield from 1964. West Ham’s last final was the agonising FA Cup defeat to Liverpool in 2006, with Steven Gerrard equalising for the Reds in injury time before winning on penalties at the Millennium Stadium. West Ham have one won regular European trophy in their history; the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup from the 1964/65 season, which was secured following a 2-0 victory in the final over 1860 Munich. The goals were scored within two minutes of each other at Wembley by Alan Sealey. The starting XI that day also included legendary West Ham figures Bobby Moore, Geoff Hurst and Martin Peters. En route to the final, West Ham got the better of Gent, Sparta Prague, Lausanne-Sport and Real Zaragoza. The Irons were beaten in the final of the same competition in 1975/76 with a 4-2 defeat to Belgian giants Anderlecht. The club have also won one minor European title – the UEFA Intertoto Cup in 1999. The summer football tournament saw West Ham crowned as one of the three champions alongside Juventus and Montpellier. Revealing his prediction for the Europa Conference League final, former Hammers defender Glen Johnson told Neue Online Casinos: ‘West Ham will win 2-1. In finals, anything can happen, but I think they will win the game. ‘It won’t be easy. The game will start off cagey, and it may take until the first 20 minutes for them to find their feet. If they don’t concede early, I would like to think that they can control the game.’ A nervy night awaits in Prague as West Ham look to end their long wait for a trophy and make history.
