Martinez, 24, has been a revelation at Old Trafford since his £56million move from Ajax in the summer, now a formidable presence in Erik ten Hag’s defence and a leader on and off the pitch.
While he was among the subs in Sunday’s thrilling final against France, the defender played in five of Argentina’s seven games out in Qatar as La Albiceleste were crowned champions for the first time since 1986.
Martinez will return to Manchester as a world champion and is expected to be available again for the New Year’s Eve clash with Wolves after a week off following his campaign in the Middle East.
In a fan Q&A, Scott McTominay was asked about what he hopes to achieve at United in the coming years.
Offering an insight into the mentality of the squad, he revealed a text message he received from Martinez after congratulating his teammate, with the Argentine already targeting more silverware.
‘I feel like the prime years in football are – it depends on how you look after yourself – but from 26 to 32, in my opinion anyway,’ McTominay said.
‘I feel like the games going that way with the longevity and stuff like that. Success will always be winning trophies and that’s the most important thing at this football club.
‘With the manager that we’ve got now we’ve got a really good opportunity to start that journey, especially this year. We’ve got a really good chance to implement ourselves and really start pushing.
‘I feel like this is the year where we can go for it and that’s firmly reiterated by all the coaches in the squad. They firmly believe that.
‘I messaged Lisandro the other day and said congratulations and he said ‘we go for the next one’. He’s just won a World Cup, so that shows the mentality that is in the group.’
United are in Carabao Cup action against Burnley on Wednesday night before they resume their Premier League campaign at home to Nottingham Forest on the 27 December.
Most of United’s World Cup contingent, including England trio Luke Shaw, Harry Maguire and Marcus Rashford and Brazil pair Casemiro and Antony, returned to training at Carrington on Tuesday.
