‘We go for the next one’ – Lisandro Martinez shows winning mentality as Argentina World Cup winner sends message to Manchester United’s Scott McTominay about next trophy

Scott McTominay has revealed that Lisandro Martinez is already looking forward to winning silverware with Manchester United after his World Cup glory.

The central defender was a part of the Argentina squad who secured their first World Cup trophy in 36 years following their stunning win over France in Qatar on Sunday.

Martinez started just two games for his country but played a key role from the bench for Argentina, meaning that the 24-year-old is a big player both on and off the pitch for his nation.

Having signed for United over the summer, Martinez is also seen as a core player for the Red Devils as well, something that was shown when McTominay revealed that the Argentine is already showing the competitive drive to win a trophy with United despite still being in the middle of Argentina’s celebrations.

Speaking about his trophy ambitions as he moves into the prime years of his career, McTominay told United’s official website: “It’s a good question.

“I feel like the prime years in football are – it depends on how you look after yourself – but from 26 to 32, in my opinion anyway.

“I feel like the game’s going that way with the longevity and stuff like that. Success will always be winning trophies and that’s the most important thing at this football club.

“With the manager that we’ve got now, we’ve got a really good opportunity to start that journey, especially this year.

“We’ve got a really good chance to implement ourselves and really start pushing. I feel like this is the year where we can go for it and that’s firmly reiterated by all the coaches in the squad. They firmly believe that.

“I messaged Lisandro the other day and said congratulations and he said: ‘We go for the next one’.

“He’s just won a World Cup, so that shows the mentality that is in the group.”
