Wayne Rooney Sacked by Birmingham City After 15 Games as Manager
Birmingham City has made the decision to sack Wayne Rooney following their defeat against Leeds United on New Year’s Day. The loss has dropped the club to 20th position in the Championship table, a significant drop from their sixth-place position when Rooney took charge in October.
In his tenure, Rooney only managed to win two out of 15 matches, failing to win over the club’s fanbase. This decision comes after John Eustace was unexpectedly sacked earlier in the season, despite guiding the club to the play-off positions.
The board’s decision to remove Rooney as manager comes after a string of poor performances and a decline in the team’s league position. The official statement from the club reads, “Birmingham City has today parted company with Manager, Wayne Rooney, and First Team Coach, Carl Robinson. Despite their best efforts, results have not met the expectations that were made clear at the outset. Therefore, the Board feels that a change in management is in the best interests of the Football Club. The Club’s Board and management are fully aligned and will continue to drive transformation and take bold steps to rebuild Birmingham City into the organization its fans and community deserve. The Board would like to place on record their sincere thanks to Wayne and Carl for all of their efforts.”
The Blues’ recent performances have been lackluster, with just one shot on target in their last two games. The defeat against Leeds United on Monday marked a turning point for supporters, who fully turned against Rooney.
When asked about his plans to persevere after the defeat, Rooney expressed his determination, saying, “Of course. I’m a fighter. I understand that football is about opinions. I’ve spoken to the owners, and we are going through a difficult period. We need to do everything we can to come out of this. What’s clear is we need some players in. We need players to come in to help with the quality of the team but also some fresh faces in the building as well. I believe in myself. We have a very young squad, and it’s difficult for the players at the minute. We have to keep believing we will get through this.”
Wayne Rooney’s appointment as manager was meant to bring about a new era for Birmingham City, a club that last competed in the Premier League in 2011. However, his tenure has been marred by poor results and a lack of support from fans.
As the club searches for a new manager, Gary Rowett, Lee Carsley, and Neil Warnock are rumored to be in the running for the position.
