Aaron Wan-Bissaka Considering Representing DR Congo at Africa Cup of Nations
Manchester United defender, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, has been approached to represent DR Congo at the Africa Cup of Nations next year. While he has yet to make a decision, Wan-Bissaka is considering the opportunity, which would require a switch of international allegiance.
Potential Loss for Manchester United
If Wan-Bissaka accepts the chance to play for DR Congo, Manchester United would lose him for a period of time in early 2024. The tournament, hosted by Ivory Coast, is scheduled to run from January 13 to February 11.
Congolese Descent and International Experience
Although born in England, Wan-Bissaka has Congolese heritage. He made a single appearance for the country’s Under-20 side in 2015. He later went on to play for England’s Under-20 and Under-21 teams but has not yet made his senior debut.
Injury and Uncertainty
In September 2019, Wan-Bissaka was called up by manager Gareth Southgate for a pair of Euro 2020 qualifiers but had to withdraw due to a back injury. Additionally, there remains uncertainty about his future at Old Trafford as his contract expires at the end of this season, although United has the option to extend it by 12 months.
Potential Absentees from Manchester United
Wan-Bissaka is not the only Manchester United player who could leave for AFCON. Goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Sofyan Amrabat are also potential absentees from the club.
