It is with great sadness that the University of North Carolina (UNC) announces the passing of Walter Davis, a basketball legend and Olympic gold medalist. Davis, who was 69 years old, died of natural causes. He leaves behind a legacy that will forever be remembered in the world of basketball.
A Stellar College Career
Walter Davis, affectionately known as “Walt,” made a significant impact during his time at UNC. As a two-time All-ACC honoree in 1976 and 1977, Davis played a pivotal role in leading the Tar Heels to an ACC tournament win and the NCAA championship game. Under the guidance of legendary coach Dean Smith, Davis showcased his skills as a guard, scoring an impressive 1,863 points and contributing 670 rebounds and 409 assists.
Olympic Glory
In addition to his college success, Davis had the honor of representing the United States at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Coached by Dean Smith, the U.S. men’s basketball team, including Davis, clinched the gold medal, solidifying their place in history.
A Remarkable NBA Career
The Phoenix Suns recognized Davis’ talent and selected him with the fifth overall pick in the 1977 NBA Draft. His rookie season proved to be exceptional, as he earned the title of Rookie of the Year for the 1977-78 season. Davis went on to become a six-time All-Star during his 15-year NBA career, which included stints with the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers. Known for his scoring ability, Davis averaged 18.9 points on an impressive 51.1 percent shooting, along with 3.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. He retired from professional basketball in 1992, leaving a lasting impact on the sport.
A Legacy That Lives On
Walter Davis, a native of Pineville, North Carolina, is revered as one of the greatest athletes to come out of the state. His contributions to the game earned him a place in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. The Phoenix Suns also recognized his remarkable career by retiring his jersey number, No. 6, in 1994. To this day, Davis remains the all-time leading scorer for the Suns.
