Walter Davis, University of North Carolina Basketball Legend and Olympic Gold Medalist, Passes Away at 69
Walter Davis, a basketball legend from the University of North Carolina and an Olympic gold medalist for the United States, passed away on Thursday due to natural causes. The news was announced by the school. Davis, who was 69 years old at the time of his passing, leaves behind a legacy that will forever be remembered in the world of basketball.
Davis, who is also the uncle of current UNC coach Hubert Davis, had an illustrious career during his time with the Tar Heels. He was a two-time All-ACC honoree in 1976 and 1977 and played a pivotal role in leading the team to an ACC tournament win and to the NCAA championship game. Known for his skills as a guard, Davis scored an impressive 1,863 points and contributed 670 rebounds and 409 assists while playing under the guidance of legendary coach Dean Smith.
In addition to his success at the collegiate level, Davis was also a key member of the U.S. men’s basketball team that won gold at the 1976 Montreal Olympics. Coached by Dean Smith, the team showcased their talent and brought home the prestigious Olympic title.
Following his college career, Davis was selected by the Phoenix Suns as the fifth overall pick in the 1977 NBA Draft. He wasted no time making an impact in the professional league and was named the Rookie of the Year for the 1977-78 season. Over his 15-year NBA career, which included stints with the Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers, Davis became a six-time All-Star. He earned two All-NBA team selections and averaged an impressive 18.9 points on 51.1 percent shooting, along with 3.0 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game before retiring in 1992.
Born in Pineville, North Carolina, Davis is regarded as one of the greatest athletes to come out of the state. His contributions to the sport earned him a well-deserved spot in the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame. Additionally, the Phoenix Suns retired his jersey number, No. 6, in 1994, recognizing his outstanding achievements and impact on the franchise. To this day, Davis remains the all-time leading scorer for the Suns.
