Jurgen Klopp has revealed key defender Virgil van Dijk will be out of action for more than a month with a hamstring issue.
Van Dijk was taken off at half-time during Liverpool’s humbling 3-1 defeat against Brentford as Klopp rang the changes after a frightening opening 45 minutes.
The Dutch centre back departed the game along with Harvey Elliott and Andy Robertson during the interval, and it was later revealed his substitution was due to an injury.
However, Klopp wasn’t expecting the hamstring issue to be so severe, and now has revealed the extent of the problem.
“Virg was a surprise for us,” he told the media on Friday. “It was obviously a big blow.
“He didn’t feel a lot and I took him off actually because of the risk so it was not clear, maybe he would have tried [to keep playing].
“In the end the diagnosis was pretty harsh and we talk about weeks, more than a month.
“I hope it goes quick but we have to see, for now he’s not available and that’s how it is.

“We have other centre halves and as long as that’s the case everything is OK for the team, but obviously for Virg it’s hard for him.
“He played an incredible amount of games over the past years so now we cannot use him on the pitch, only off the pitch.
Klopp later added: “It’s a muscle thing – nothing different to say – it was one sprint too much in that moment.”
Next up for the Reds is their first FA Cup tie of the season as they take on Wolves at Anfield.
Despite losing Van Dijk, his countryman and new signing Cody Gakpo appears raring to go following his £37million arrival from PSV Eindhoven.
“With Cody it’s the other way around, Cody’s in for two full training days now and it’s a joy to watch to be honest,” Klopp said.
“With our situation, with our injuries with the strikers, it’s really nice to have a guy on the pitch who is pretty natural in a lot of things, in the offensive part of the game, and knows where the goal stands and that’s very helpful and he’s full of joy, he’s enjoying each second in the moment.”
