Vincent Kompany Should Stay at Burnley, Says Gabby Agbonlahor
Gabby Agbonlahor, a former Aston Villa striker and current talkSPORT pundit, has advised Vincent Kompany to stay at Burnley despite being linked with the vacant managerial role at Tottenham Hotspur. Kompany, who captained Manchester City to four Premier League titles, has worked wonders at Burnley this season by securing their promotion to the top flight. It is his second job as a manager, having previously been at Anderlecht in his home country of Belgium.
talkSPORT understands that Kompany is on the list of Spurs’ managerial targets. However, Agbonlahor believes he would be better off staying with Burnley and having a crack at further success at Turf Moor. Speaking on talkSPORT Breakfast, he said: “I can see why they’re looking at Kompany, but if I was Kompany I would say no. Capital letters, NO. He’s got Burnley into the Premier League, give it a go with Burnley and even if he didn’t keep Burnley up, what he done with them in the Championship is still going to attract Premier League jobs.”
Agbonlahor added that the way Spurs are currently performing as a club, it would not be wise for Kompany to leave Burnley. He said: “The way Spurs are at the moment as a club, why would you touch that? Why would you leave Burnley… he could, in the summer, bring in the right players and have a good go with Burnley and shock the Premier League. You know like Sheffield United did, Leeds did? He could do that with Burnley.”
Burnley secured their instant return to the top flight with a 2-1 win away at Middlesbrough last Friday. They are also on course to win the Championship title this season as they sit 14 points ahead of Sheffield United with six games to play. Kompany certainly has a bright future as a manager, and Agbonlahor believes that he could achieve great things with Burnley.
Former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has been linked with the Spurs job, with fans singing his name in the controversial win over Brighton. However, he has reportedly rejected a possible return in order to hold out for the Real Madrid job. Ex-Bayern Munich manager Julien Nagelsmann is also a speculated option alongside Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, although he is more likely to reject a move.
