Columbus Crew Finalizing Deal to Acquire Julian Gressel in Trade with Vancouver Whitecaps

The Columbus Crew is reportedly in the final stages of acquiring U.S. international midfielder Julian Gressel in a trade with the Vancouver Whitecaps, according to sources involved in the deal. Gressel, who has been a standout player for the Whitecaps this season, is set to join the Crew in a move that will see him return to the East Coast.

Gressel, 29, has had an impressive season with the Whitecaps, contributing three goals and five assists in 18 appearances, 16 of which he started. However, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season, Gressel was keen on a move back to the East Coast. The midfielder previously played for Atlanta United and D.C. United after a successful college career at Providence College in Rhode Island.

Vancouver made a strong offer to Gressel for a new contract, but his family’s preference to be on the East Coast ultimately led to a breakdown in negotiations. When Columbus presented an acceptable offer, Vancouver involved Gressel in the process, paving the way for the trade.

This is not the first time Gressel has been involved in a surprise trade. When he was initially acquired by Vancouver from D.C. United, Gressel revealed that he only found out about the deal after it was already done, as D.C. did not authorize Vancouver to speak to him or his agent.

Gressel brings a wealth of experience to the Crew, having won an MLS Cup in 2018 and the U.S. Open Cup in 2019 with Atlanta United, as well as back-to-back Canadian Championships with Vancouver. Known for his versatility, Gressel is expected to play as a wingback on the right flank in Wilfried Nancy’s back three formation, allowing him to make attacking contributions while also providing defensive stability. His ability to deliver accurate crosses makes him one of the best crossers in MLS, and he has also shown his versatility by playing in central midfield for Vancouver this season.

The addition of Gressel to Columbus’ already potent attack, led by Cucho Hernandez, Lucas Zelarayan, and Christian Ramirez, is expected to provide the team with even more quality service. Gressel’s crossing ability and attacking prowess will complement the attacking trio and enhance the team’s chances of success.

Gressel, who obtained United States citizenship last winter, has already made four appearances for the USMNT. He recently featured in the Gold Cup tournament, further showcasing his talent on the international stage.

As for the current standings, Columbus sits sixth in the Eastern Conference with 36 points after 23 matches, while Vancouver is seventh in the West with 31 points after 22 matches. The addition of Gressel to the Crew’s roster could potentially boost their chances of climbing higher in the standings and securing a playoff spot.

In conclusion, the Columbus Crew’s acquisition of Julian Gressel from the Vancouver Whitecaps is nearing completion. The trade will see Gressel return to the East Coast and join a talented Crew team that is aiming for success in the MLS. With his impressive track record and versatility, Gressel is expected to make a significant impact on both ends of the field for Columbus. Fans can look forward to seeing Gressel’s contributions as he joins forces with the likes of Hernandez, Zelarayan, and Ramirez in the Crew’s high-flying attack.
