Virgil van Dijk Responds to Jarell Quansah’s Comments on Joel Matip’s Injury
Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk has addressed Jarell Quansah’s recent comments about Joel Matip’s injury, acknowledging that they were not worded correctly but were made with good intentions.
Quansah’s Ambition to Replace Matip
In a recent interview, Quansah revealed his ambition to surpass Matip in the defensive pecking order. Matip suffered an ACL injury during a match against Fulham, which may potentially be his last game for the club as his contract expires this summer.
Van Dijk Defends Quansah
Captain Virgil van Dijk came to Quansah’s defense, stating that it is positive to have such ambition within the team, even if the comments were not expressed in the right way. Van Dijk believes that Quansah did not mean any harm and that his words were perhaps influenced by his young age.
Quansah’s Increased Role
Despite the initial bluntness of Quansah’s comments, Matip’s absence has led to an increased role for the young defender. Quansah has already made 14 appearances for Liverpool this season, with four starts since Matip’s injury in December.
Under Jurgen Klopp’s guidance, Quansah has had a breakthrough season and will be eager to contribute to Liverpool’s pursuit of success across multiple competitions.
