Turkish Club President Receives Permanent Ban for Punching Referee
Faruk Koca, the president of Turkish side Ankaragucu, has been permanently banned from all football activities after physically assaulting a match referee.
Violent Incident at Turkish Super Lig Match
During a Turkish Super Lig match on Monday night, Ankaragucu, hosting Rizespor at the Eryaman Stadium, was on the verge of victory before Adolfo Gaich scored an equalizer for the visitors in injury time. The home team’s forward Ali Sowe was also sent off in the 50th minute, which led to an angry response from the home supporters.
After the final whistle, Koca stormed towards referee Halil Umut Meler and punched him in the face, causing him to fall to the ground. Koca was subsequently arrested.
Consequences and Punishments
Meler was hospitalized and seen wearing a neck brace following the attack. As a result of the incident, all professional football matches in Turkey have been indefinitely postponed. Koca also resigned from his position as club president and issued an apology for his actions.
The Turkish Football Federation (TFF) has taken further action by imposing a permanent ban on Koca. Additionally, Ankaragucu has been fined two million lira (£54,000) and will play five home games without fans due to the chaotic scenes.
TFF Condemns the Attack
In a statement released several hours after the match, the Turkish Football Federation condemned the attack on referee Halil Umut Meler, describing it as ‘inhumane and despicable.’ The federation expressed its concern for Meler’s health and wished him a speedy recovery.
The statement also criticized the irresponsible statements made by club presidents, managers, coaches, and TV commentators that target referees, suggesting that these statements contributed to the attack. The TFF has initiated criminal proceedings against those responsible for the attack and vowed to punish them severely.
