Trevor Francis: Footballing legend passes away at 69
It is with great sadness that we report the passing of Trevor Francis, the first British footballer to cost £1m, at the age of 69. His family released a statement on Monday saying: ‘Trevor Francis has died at the age of 69. He had a heart attack at his apartment in Spain this morning. On behalf of the family this has come as a huge shock to everybody. We are all very upset. He was a legendary footballer but he was also an extremely nice person.’
Trevor Francis: A career in football
Francis starred for Birmingham City throughout the 1979s and his 133 goals for the club remains second on their all-time list. His goal-scoring exploits saw him bought by Nottingham Forest in 1979 for the record-breaking fee of £1m. He would go on to win two European Cups with Forest before going on to play for the likes of Manchester City, Sampdoria, Rangers and Sheffield Wednesday, winning 52 caps for England.
The forward would go on to manager QPR, Sheffield Wednesday, Birmingham and Crystal Palace, also working as a pundit and commentator in his post-playing career.
Tributes pour in for Trevor Francis
Gary Lineker wrote on Twitter: ‘Deeply saddened to hear that Trevor Francis has died. A wonderful footballer and lovely man. Was a pleasure to work alongside him both on the pitch and on the telly. RIP Trevor.’
Viv Anderson, who played with him with England and Wednesday wrote on Instagram: ‘Just heard the unbelievable news regarding Trevor Francis, he was such a wonderful person and fabulous teammate he will be sadly missed, my condolences go to his family and friends RIP.’
Fellow Forest and England great Peter Shilton wrote: ‘I’m absolutely devastated to hear about my old team mate Trevor Francis such a wonderful gentleman a friend and a terrible loss.’
Chris Kamara added: ‘Oh no, just heard Trevor Francis has passed away. What a player he was & what a gentleman. Got to know him well when Trevor was doing his Co Commentary’s for Sky a job he loved. RIP Trevor the first Million pound player who always looked a million dollars.’
