Former Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp says the north London club should look to sign Luka Modric this summer as they ‘need someone to run the game for them.’
Spurs are without a permanent manager after Antonio Conte’s exit and have slipped out of the Champions League places due to back-to-back draws.
They were poor on Monday night as they drew 1-1 with Everton, unable to capitalise on leading with the Toffees down to 10 men.
A key problem, according to Redknapp, is the lack of a calming presence in midfield to keep hold of the ball and he thinks Modric would be the man to solve it.
The 37-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season and could be a target for the club he left over a decade ago.
‘Tottenham need better recruitment, especially someone who can put their foot on the ball in midfield,’ Redknapp told PA.
‘If I was them I’d be looking at Luka Modric if he leaves Real Madrid. I’d take him for two years.
‘They need someone to run the game for them and he does that with his quality in midfield.
‘Look at them at Everton on Monday. They go one up (against 10 men) but kept giving the ball away.’
On Tottenham’s managerial search, Redknapp is not sure who the answer is, or if Spurs could even get the man that they want, with Chelsea also looking for a new permanent boss.
‘They are in a bit of a mess. I’m not sure what happens at Tottenham in the summer,’ he said.
‘It looked as if [Julian] Nagelsmann might go to Tottenham, now Chelsea are in for him after changing their manager. Poch [Mauricio Pochettino] would be a popular choice, but he could do Chelsea or Tottenham.
‘Whoever comes in has got to bring in quality players in the summer. It doesn’t matter how clever you are, you’ve got to have good players.’
