Tottenham Hotspur fans around the world are mourning the loss of Terry Medwin, a true legend of the club. Medwin, who passed away at the age of 91, played a key role in Tottenham’s historic double-winning season in 1961 under the guidance of manager Bill Nicholson. The news was announced by the club on social media, expressing their deep sadness at the passing of their former player.
During his time at Tottenham, Medwin made 215 appearances across all competitions and scored an impressive 72 goals. His impact on the team was undeniable, and he will always be remembered as part of the iconic double-winning side. Medwin’s contributions were not limited to domestic success, as he also lifted the Charity Shield in 1961 and 1962, and helped Tottenham secure the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963.
Before joining Tottenham, Medwin began his professional career at his hometown club Swansea City. He played nearly 150 times for Swansea in the Football League before securing a move to Tottenham for a fee of £25,000 in 1956. The winger made an immediate impact by scoring two goals on his debut in a 4-1 victory over Preston.
Medwin’s talent extended beyond club football, as he also represented Wales on the international stage. He was a part of the Welsh squad that competed in the 1958 World Cup, where he scored the winning goal in the first round play-off to send Wales into the quarter-finals. In fact, Medwin remained the last player to score for Wales at a major tournament until Gareth Bale’s heroics at Euro 2016. In total, he earned 30 caps for his country and scored six goals.
After retiring from playing, Medwin continued his involvement in football. He managed in non-league football at Cheshunt and later worked as a coach at Cardiff City, Fulham, and Norwich City. He also served as assistant manager to John Toshack at Swansea.
Terry Medwin’s legacy as a Tottenham legend and Welsh international will live on in the hearts of football fans. His contributions to the game, both on and off the field, will be remembered with great admiration. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.
