Tottenham in Talks to Sign Nice Defender Jean-Clair Todibo Amid Competition from Manchester United
Tottenham have initiated discussions to secure the signing of Jean-Clair Todibo, a defender from Nice. However, they face competition from long-time admirers Manchester United, as per reports.
Both Premier League Clubs in Need of a Central Defender
Both Tottenham and Manchester United are currently in search of a new central defender. Tottenham’s lack of options at the back has been highlighted by Micky van de Ven’s hamstring injury, forcing Ben Davies and Emerson Royal to fill in at centre-back. Meanwhile, Eric Dier, who has six months left on his contract, is set to leave the club and is low down in the pecking order under Ange Postecoglou. Manchester United, on the other hand, have several options at centre-back but have been limited by injuries. There are also doubts surrounding Raphael Varane’s future at the club.
Todibo Emerges as a Primary Target
Jean-Clair Todibo has emerged as one of the primary targets for Manchester United to provide cover and competition in defense. Tottenham also views him as an ideal addition to their defensive options. According to Fabrizio Romano, Tottenham has taken the first step by initiating talks with Nice.
Spurs highly rate former Barcelona defender Todibo and have also been linked with other potential defensive signings such as Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, Lloyd Kelly from Bournemouth, and Radu Dragusin from Genoa.
Obstacles in the Deal
Securing a deal with Nice for Todibo will not be easy due to complications arising from the fact that Nice is owned by Ineos, who are currently finalizing the purchase of a 25% minority stake in Manchester United. Once the deal is completed, it could facilitate Manchester United’s move for Todibo, but it is believed that their pursuit depends on one of their existing centre-backs leaving the club first.
Despite Nice’s promising start to the season, they have suffered two defeats in their last three Ligue 1 matches, falling five points behind leaders PSG. Todibo is reportedly open to leaving the club midway through the campaign.
Quick Deal Desired by Tottenham
Tottenham aims to wrap up the deal quickly, as manager Ange Postecoglou has emphasized the need for January moves to happen soon in order to maximize their benefits. Most of the club’s injured players are expected to return shortly after the window closes.
