Tottenham have confirmed the appointment of Ange Postecoglou as their new manager, signing the Australian to a four-year deal. The north London club had been searching for a successor to Antonio Conte for the past two months and had made a move for Arne Slot, only for the Dutchman to extend his contract with Feyenoord. Postecoglou, who is the first Australian to manage in the Premier League, has a strong track record of developing players and an understanding of the importance of the link from the academy.
Postecoglou started his coaching career 27 years ago at South Melbourne before progressing to the youth setup at Australia, then a spell in the Greek third division with Panachaiki. He then made a name for himself at Brisbane Roar, managing Melbourne Victory before taking over the reins of the Australian national team, managing at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. He then moved to Yokohama F. Marinos in the J-League in 2017, guiding them to a first title in 15 years, and then to Celtic two years ago where he won successive titles and claimed a domestic treble this season.
Postecoglou will be hoping to have a similar impact in north London as he did in Glasgow, with Spurs wanting him to overhaul the side’s style of play. He faces a difficult summer, though, with Spurs needing to trim a bloated squad that will not be playing in Europe for the first time in 14 seasons, while significant questions exist over the future of top scorer Harry Kane, who is out of contract in 2024.
