Tottenham boss Antonio Conte ‘has made us feel like winners’ says Matt Doherty while Ryan Sessegnon credits the Spurs boss for ‘changing the mentality inside of me’

Antonio Conte has been praised for ‘changing the mentality of the whole club’ by fullback Matt Doherty.

Conte is in his first full season with Tottenham Hotspur after joining the side in November 2021 and was seen as a huge coup for the north London side.

And Sessegnon has been one of the big beneficiaries

The move quickly paid dividends for Spurs, with the five-time league winner in England and Italy steering his side to a top four finish and Champions League football ahead of rivals Arsenal.

Things have continued in a similar fashion this campaign with Spurs picking up 17 points from a possible 21, while recruits such as Richarlison and Rodrigo Bentancur have impressed.

Another player who has had a resurgence under Conte is fullback Doherty, who emerged from the sidelines to become a key player last season, and has complimented his bosses impact on a team without a trophy in 14 years.

The Irishman said: “We’re not dominating teams with the ball but we never look in threat of conceding many goals and with the boys up top we always have chances to win.

“Mentally he’s changed the mentality of the whole club, he’s made us feel like we can win, he’s made us feel like winners.

“We know he’s obviously won a lot in the past and we’re trying to join the ride with him.”

Doherty was one of Spurs’ top performers under Conte last season when he previously looked set to depart

On the opposite side of the pitch, fellow fullback Sessegnon has similarly bestowed the virtues of Conte, who is leading the youngster towards his undoubted top level potential.

The 22-year-old emerged as one of European football’s top prospects with Fulham in the 2017/18 season, but had failed to hit those heights at Spurs, until Conte arrived.

“He gives me confidence,” Sessegnon explained. “The way he wants me to play, it suits me very well and he’s changed the mentality inside of me.

Sessegnon looks like he may be back on track to reach the potential that made him one of football’s top young prospects

“It all started from a physical point of view, in terms of feeling good in my body and then giving me the platform to go out and prove to him that I can play at this level.

“I knew coming into a new season it was going to be the first time the gaffer could really set out his team I knew I had to go away and get my body right, and I knew it was going to be a gruelling pre-season when we went to South Korea and my body got through that thankfully and it’s been a good start to the season.

“Double sessions every day with my fitness guy, we start around 7:30 for the first sessions and around 3:30 for the second sessions so it’s long days, not much rest but it’s paid off so far so I’m happy with that.”
