Chelsea’s hopes of a top-four finish in the Premier League were dealt a blow as they were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Goals from Heung-Min Son and Giovani Lo Celso secured the win for Spurs, who moved up to sixth in the table.
Chelsea head coach Graham Potter was disappointed with the result but praised his side’s performance in the opening 20 minutes. He said: “We were the better team in the opening 20 minutes and had some good chances to score but we didn’t take them. We weren’t able to sustain that level of performance and Tottenham took control of the game.”
Potter was also critical of his side’s defending, saying: “We weren’t able to defend well enough and that cost us. We have to be better in those situations if we want to get a result.”
The defeat leaves Chelsea fifth in the table, four points behind fourth-placed Leicester City. They now face a crucial run of fixtures against Manchester United, Liverpool and Arsenal in the coming weeks.
Despite the loss, Potter remains confident that his side can still qualify for the Champions League. He said: “We have a lot of games left and we are still in a good position. We have to keep believing and keep fighting for every point. We have a good squad and I believe we can achieve our goal.”
Chelsea’s next game is against Manchester United on Monday evening and Potter will be hoping his side can bounce back with a positive result. He said: “We have to look forward now and focus on our next game against Manchester United. We have to put this result behind us and focus on getting a positive result.”
