Tim Ream Aims to Play for USMNT at the Next World Cup
Fulham defender Tim Ream has expressed his desire to represent the United States Men’s National Team (USMNT) at the next World Cup, which will be held on home soil in three years’ time. Ream, who will be 38 at the time of the tournament, is determined to continue his international career and hopes to be a regular on both the club and national team sheets.
Ream, who has earned 51 caps for his country, played a crucial role in Fulham’s successful return to the Premier League last season. He featured in every game until a fractured arm forced him to miss the last five fixtures. Despite his injury setback, Ream’s performances were instrumental in Fulham’s 10th-place finish.
Although Ream was unable to participate fully in Fulham’s pre-season preparations due to his injury, he made a strong comeback in the team’s opening day victory against Everton. After the match, Ream revealed that he had spoken with USMNT coach Greg Berhalter in July and discussed his ambitions to represent his country at the Copa America, which will be held in the USA next summer.
Ream stated, “Ideally if I’m playing here (for Fulham), I don’t see why not. That’s a near-term goal. The long-term goal is to make it to another World Cup, especially because it’s that World Cup. Assuming we qualify though, I would absolutely jump at the chance to play at another major tournament next summer.”
Berhalter, who recently began his second spell as USMNT head coach, wasted no time in reaching out to Ream. The two had several conversations, during which Berhalter expressed his interest in having Ream as part of the national team setup.
Ream spoke highly of his conversations with Berhalter, saying, “We had a chance to chat and catch up a little bit, not about anything serious, more asking about my situation and my arm.” The defender appreciated the coach’s interest and support, which further fueled his determination to secure a spot in the national team.
Ream’s partnership with fellow USMNT teammate Antonee Robinson on Fulham’s left side of defense has been a strong point for both the club and the national team. Ream believes that their familiarity and understanding of each other’s playing style can benefit both sides. However, he acknowledges that nothing is guaranteed and that he must continue to perform consistently to earn his place in the team.
Ream’s return to action against Everton showcased his defensive prowess as Fulham kept a clean sheet despite Everton’s numerous chances. The experienced center back hopes to build on this performance and maintain his form throughout the season to impress both his club manager, Marco Silva, and USMNT coach Berhalter.
Ream’s determination to represent his country at another World Cup demonstrates his passion and commitment to the sport. Despite his age, he believes that he is fit enough and has the necessary experience to contribute to the national team’s success.
As Ream continues his journey with Fulham and aims to secure a spot in the USMNT squad for the upcoming Copa America and the subsequent World Cup, fans will be eagerly watching his performances on the pitch. With his leadership qualities and defensive abilities, Ream could be a valuable asset for both club and country in the years to come.
