Thomas Tuchel’s risk paid off as Bayern Munich retained their Bundesliga title for the 11th season in a row in extraordinary circumstances on Saturday. Despite Borussia Dortmund starting the day in a commanding position, two points ahead of their rivals, Niklas Sule’s last minute equaliser proved to be enough for Bayern to prevail on goal difference. Dejan Ljubicic’s successful penalty kick prompted Tuchel to take one last roll of the dice and introduce eventual match winner Jamal Musiala and Mathys Tel at the expense of Leon Goretzka, who had only been introduced as a 71st minute replacement for Ryan Gravenberch. Goretzka was said to have cut a disconsolate figure during the post match celebrations and subsequent title party, and Tuchel apologised for his decision. He said: ‘That was a horrible decision for him, I’m sorry about that, I apologised to him. But it was about the title in the last 10 minutes and we had to switch back to 4-2-3-1. I couldn’t take anything else into account.’
The season ultimately ended in glory for Bayern, however, the club remains in a measure of disarray. CEO Oliver Kahn was sacked an hour after the final whistle and forbidden from taking part in the team celebrations, while fellow board member Hassan Salihamidzic has also been relieved of his duties. Thomas Muller, whose own future is in doubt, conceded he understood those who believe Bayern stole the title away from Dortmund undeservedly, but was in no mood to apologise. He said: ‘I’m definitely not going to apologise for winning the title & being happy about it. But when you think of the others, I’m sorry (for them) – even though they don’t want or need to hear it. I don’t really want to come off as big-hearted, but that’s tough for them.’
