Last summer, Chelsea were in the market for a new striker after allowing Romelu Lukaku to return to Inter on loan following his disappointing first season back at Stamford Bridge. Thomas Tuchel was consulted about the prospect of signing Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City, however, the idea was rejected by the manager. This decision was met with ‘surprise’ by Chelsea’s board. Eventually, Chelsea signed Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona and Jesus ended up joining Arsenal in a £45 million deal.
Thomas Tuchel was sacked by Chelsea in September and replaced with Graham Potter, however, The Guardian reports that the club’s hierarchy now ‘regret’ how quickly they made their managerial change. Potter lasted less than seven months in charge at Stamford Bridge before he was sacked and Chelsea limped to the end of the season, registering their worst points tally in Premier League history.
Chelsea remain in the market for a striker and new manager Mauricio Pochettino is keen to link up with Harry Kane, who he worked with at Tottenham. However, it is unlikely that Spurs chairman Daniel Levy would ever approve a move for Kane to join Chelsea, while Manchester United have also made the England captain their top target for the summer window.
