Brentford boss Thomas Frank was surprised by Frank Lampard’s team selection for Chelsea’s 2-0 defeat to the Bees at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night. Lampard started the match with Raheem Sterling as the sole forward, with a back five that had central midfielders N’Golo Kante, Enzo Fernandez, Mateo Kovacic and Conor Gallagher in front of it. Chelsea have scored just once in six matches under Lampard and they were limp in front of goal again against the Bees. Frank admitted that his players were ‘surprised’ and ‘pleased’ by Lampard’s tactics, saying: ‘We were pleased they showed us so much respect. I was surprised. I respect every team, we don’t fear any team. We talked about the team when we saw the line-up. It’s still Chelsea, still Stamford Bridge, still unbelievable players. We’ve tried to add layers and work hard on the different systems and principles and the way we were in control for the game was very good.’ For more stories like this, check our sport page.
