Thiago Alcantara will not be able to play for Liverpool for the remainder of this season due to an ongoing hip problem. The 32-year-old Spanish midfielder has made 28 appearances for the Reds this season and was available for the last four games prior to Sunday’s 4-3 win over Tottenham, but did not feature in any of them. Reports have now confirmed that Thiago will undergo a minor surgery to correct the hip flexor injury, which has been a long-standing issue and has kept him out of action for stages earlier in the campaign.
With only five games left in the season, Thiago’s absence means Liverpool will have to look at other options. Football Insider’s David Lynch and The Times’ Paul Joyce have reported that Brighton midfielder Alexis Mac Allister is “high on the list of targets” for the Reds, with it widely expected that at least two new players will be brought in this summer. Thiago is entering the final year of his contract at Anfield and it is unlikely he will be offered an extension due to his age and fitness issues.
