‘They’re light years behind him’ – Robert Lewandowski compared to Andy Carroll and Harry Kane following ‘selfless’ display for Poland in Mexico stalemate

Robert Lewandowski is so good for Poland, his national teammates are actually ‘light years behind him’.

That’s the view of the talkSPORT commentary team watching what was a frustrating night for the Barcelona forward as he cut an isolated figure for long spells in the 0-0 draw with Mexico.

Lewandowski did have the best chance of the night but saw his penalty saved by Mexico veteran Guillermo Ochoa, however, according to Tony Cascarino, the 34-year-old had to play an ‘unselfish’ role to aid his teammates.

“I’m watching Lewandowski, one of the greatest strikers in world football and his role is like what Andy Carroll used to do.

“Just winning headers, fouls and flick-ons. That’s all he’s done.”

Commentator Joe Shennan added: “It’s not befitting of him. His teammates are just light years behind him.”

Cascarino then added: If you look back to the game with England, Harry Kane did a lot of unselfish work and never got a chance in the game and that’s what Lewandowski was doing tonight.

“He had a really tough night, Lewandowski.

“He was battling away all night with two centre-halves and I felt a bit for him. There wasn’t enough quality around him to create chances.

“I felt that Mexico were the better team but in the end Poland had the best chance and didn’t take it.”

Argentina will be happy with the result, though, given it means they have a better chance of getting out of the group.

They are bottom but are just one point behind Poland and Mexico, with Saudi Arabia top.
