Barcelona Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen Considering Surgery for Back Injury
Barcelona and their goalkeeper, Marc-Andre ter Stegen, are contemplating surgery as a potential solution for his ongoing back problem. The 31-year-old has been sidelined for the team’s last three games since November 12 due to this injury. He even withdrew from the Germany squad during last month’s international break because of the same issue.
However, it is important to note that surgery does not guarantee a definitive solution to the problem. Both the club and the player are currently evaluating their options. If Ter Stegen decides to undergo surgery, he would likely be out of action for approximately two months. This would create a race against time for him to recover and be fit for the Champions League last 16 in February.
In the meantime, Ter Stegen will rest and assess his condition ahead of Barcelona’s upcoming match against second-place Girona. If the pain persists, he will remain on the sidelines. Despite testing himself before each of Barcelona’s last three games, the pain has prevented him from participating.
Xavi, Barcelona’s coach, expressed his concern about Ter Stegen’s injury, stating, “He’s tested himself again, but he’s still in pain. We’ll see next week. His back injury doesn’t let him play as he should. Marc is so involved with the group that he suffers when he can’t play and help out, but it is what it is right now.”
Ter Stegen played a crucial role in Barcelona’s success last season, starting in every La Liga match as they secured their first league title since 2019. He also equaled the La Liga record for clean sheets with 26, previously held by former Deportivo goalkeeper Paco Liano. This season, Ter Stegen has been a regular presence, featuring in 17 matches across all competitions and frequently captaining the team. Barcelona has managed two wins and a draw in his absence.
The decision regarding surgery will have significant implications for Ter Stegen’s recovery and Barcelona’s performance in the upcoming months. Both the player and the club are carefully considering their options to ensure the best possible outcome for everyone involved.
