Introducing Dominik Szoboszlai: Liverpool’s Second Summer Signing

Liverpool have made their second signing of the summer with the arrival of Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai. The 20-year-old joins the Reds from Red Bull Salzburg and has been handed the No. 8 shirt, previously worn by club legend Steven Gerrard.

The Reds triggered a £60 million release clause in Szoboszlai’s contract shortly before the June 30 deadline, and the midfielder has now officially been unveiled as the club’s latest recruit.

Szoboszlai’s Career So Far

Dominik Szoboszlai began his career with Hungarian side MTK Budapest, before joining Red Bull Salzburg in 2018. He has since made over 100 appearances for the Austrian club, scoring 25 goals and providing 24 assists.

The 20-year-old has also represented Hungary at international level, making his debut in 2019 and scoring three goals in 12 appearances for his country.

What Can We Expect From Szoboszlai?

Szoboszlai is a versatile midfielder who can play in a variety of positions. He is most comfortable playing as an attacking midfielder, but can also play out wide or as a deep-lying playmaker.

The Hungarian is known for his creativity and technical ability on the ball, and is capable of producing moments of magic with his passing and shooting. He is also a set-piece specialist, and has a penchant for scoring long-range screamers.

Szoboszlai’s arrival has given Liverpool fans plenty of reason to get excited ahead of next season, with many already comparing him to club legend Steven Gerrard.

The Verdict: Was Szoboszlai the Right Choice?

Liverpool were linked with a number of midfielders during the transfer window, including England youngster Jude Bellingham. However, the Reds opted to pursue Szoboszlai instead and it appears to have been a wise decision.

The Hungarian is an exciting prospect who has already shown glimpses of his potential at Red Bull Salzburg. He is capable of producing moments of magic with his passing and shooting, and is also a set-piece specialist.

If Szoboszlai is even half as good as Gerrard was during his time at Liverpool, then the Reds have made a shrewd signing. Only time will tell if he can live up to the hype, but for now Liverpool fans can be forgiven for getting excited about their new No. 8!
