Sutton United Sacks Manager Matt Gray
League Two’s bottom side, Sutton United, has made the decision to terminate the contract of manager Matt Gray.
Gray’s Achievements at Sutton United
Gray, 42, took charge of Sutton United in 2019 and successfully led the team to the Football League for the first time in their history in 2021.
“Matt will forever have a significant place in Sutton’s history as the manager who guided us to the Football League,” stated the club in an official statement.
Inconsistent Performance
Sutton United started the season with an impressive 5-1 victory over Notts County. However, they then experienced a slump, losing their next seven league games and failing to secure another win in League Two until October.
Although they have only managed to secure one more league victory since then, Sutton United has reached the third round of the FA Cup and will face Plymouth in the upcoming match.
Previous Seasons
In their first season in League Two under Gray’s management, Sutton United narrowly missed out on the play-offs by just one point, finishing eighth. Last season, they finished 14th and also reached the final of the EFL Trophy, where they were defeated by Rotherham on penalties.
The decision to dismiss Gray was described as “extremely difficult” by the club, considering his contributions to the team’s success.
Club’s Gratitude and Future Plans
The club expressed their immense gratitude to Matt Gray for his dedication, commitment, and hard work during his four and a half years in charge. They acknowledged his popularity within the club and wished him the best for his future career.
An update on the immediate future of the managerial position at Sutton United will be provided at a later date.
