Controversial VAR Decisions Causing Family and Friend Rows, Survey Finds
A recent survey has revealed that controversial VAR decisions in football matches are causing friction and fallings-out among fans. Approximately one in eight footie fans admitted that these decisions have led to arguments and disputes within their social circles.
VAR Decisions vs. Referee Decisions
In contrast, only one in twelve fans said that decisions made by Premier League on-pitch referees resulted in serious anger. This highlights the significant impact that VAR decisions have on fan relationships compared to traditional referee decisions.
Arsenal Fans Argue the Most
The survey also found that Arsenal fans are the most likely to argue with their loved ones about VAR decisions, with a staggering 20% of Gunners’ supporters admitting to bickering over these controversial calls. Chelsea, Southampton, Manchester United, and Tottenham fans also ranked high on the list of those who frequently engage in disputes over VAR decisions.
On the other hand, Aston Villa fans had the least number of rows, with only six percent reporting conflicts after matches.
Disallowed Goals and Penalty Decisions
Betting site freebets.com conducted the survey among 2,000 Premier League fans. The results showed that arguments are most commonly caused by disallowed goals due to offside rulings and penalty decisions.
Tim Agnew, a spokesperson for freebets.com, commented on the findings, stating, “The positive news is that VAR is making referees more popular, as they are no longer solely responsible for fans’ fury.”
Potential Expansion of VAR Checks
Last week, the International FA Board announced that it is considering expanding the current VAR checks for goals, penalties, and red cards to include corners, free kicks, and yellow cards. This decision aims to further enhance the accuracy and fairness of VAR decisions in football matches.
