On Friday night, Villa Park paid tribute to Her Majesty prior to and during their 1-0 win over Southampton, impeccably observing a minute’s silence, the national anthem and a 70th minute applause.

But before the Villans secured their second win of the season, manager Gerrard had received a message from the late Queen’s grandson.

The new Prince of Wales is currently in London waiting to attend the Queen’s funeral on Monday – however he still took time to give Gerrard and his squad some words of encouragement before their fixture.

“He messaged in the week, to the club, and that shows everything about what he thinks of this club,” Gerrard revealed.

“For us to reward that with a result and clean sheet, I’m sure he will be proud.

“It was along the lines of ‘would love to be there’.”

Jacob Ramsey’s first-half winner takes Villa up to 13th in the Premier League table, with the victory also marking their first clean sheet since April.

And Gerrard credited Prince William for how much His Royal Highness helps Aston Villa, even during one of the most difficult times of his life.

“He is consistently in touch,” Gerrard continued, “He is very supportive of the boys individually, he loves them. It’s really impressive, his knowledge, and how much he is in to it.

“It certainly took me back. He is very much involved in Villa. For him to message in the situation he is in is really impressive.

“Where we were before the game, in terms of our league position, it was about the result. It wasn’t pretty or stylish but was all about resilience, guts, character and owning the pitch.”
