Southampton Women Sign Norwegian Goalkeeper Benedicte Haaland
Southampton Women have made an exciting addition to their squad with the signing of Norwegian goalkeeper Benedicte Haaland during the January transfer window. Haaland, 25, joins the Women’s Championship side after playing for Bristol City in the Women’s Super League (WSL).
Although she shares the same last name as Manchester City superstar Erling Haaland, Benedicte Haaland is not related to him. She has represented Norway at U17 and U19 levels and has played for various teams across Europe, including a recent stint with Scottish club Hibernian.
Expressing her excitement about joining Southampton, Haaland said, “I’ve heard great things about the club and it’s very good to be here. I’ve been following Southampton and have seen how quickly they’ve done well in the last few years. It’s definitely something I wanted to be a part of.”
Southampton Women’s boss, Marieanne Spacey-Cale, welcomed Haaland to the club, stating, “We’re really pleased to welcome Benedicte to the club. She’ll add some further experience to our goalkeeping unit and help provide real competition for Kayla [Rendell] and Beth [Howard].”
Southampton’s Ambitions in the Women’s Championship
Currently sitting fourth in the Women’s Championship, Southampton Women are determined to secure promotion to the WSL, the top-flight of women’s football. They are just two points behind league leaders Charlton after 13 games.
In their last match, Southampton Women defeated Watford 3-0. They will face Tottenham in the Women’s League Cup on Thursday.
