Southampton set to beat Newcastle to France Under-21 striker Sekou Mara amid Bordeaux financial problems

Southampton are set to beat Newcastle to the signing of Bordeaux striker Sekou Mara, talkSPORT understands.

Saints have agreed a deal worth £11million with add-ons for Mara, who is booked to undergo a medical this week.

The 19-year-old has scored seven goals in 36 games for the Ligue 1 side and has represented France at Under-16s, 17s, 20s and 21s level.

Bordeaux finished bottom of Ligue 1 last season in a campaign where they conceded 91 goals.

However, their problems deepened when they were relegated to the third tier following their financial issues.

The club appealed in a bid to start the season in Ligue 2, but they will instead be plunged down to Championnat National – putting them at real risk of going bankrupt.

Southampton, meanwhile, have been looking for a replacement for Armando Broja following his return to Chelsea at the end of his loan spell.

The 20-year-old scored six Premier League goals last season and was seriously impressive in Ralph Hassenhuttl’s side.

He looks likely to join West Ham, although whether that will be a permanent deal or a loan move remains to be seen.

The Saints have been busy in the transfer market this summer, making four signings so far.

Joe Aribo joined from Rangers in a £10m deal, while centre-back Armel Bella-Kotchap was signed from VfL Bochum.

They also made a double swoop for Man City youngsters Gavin Bazunu and Romeo Lavia.
