Liverpool ended their disappointing season with a game that summed up their inconsistent campaign, shipping four goals to already-relegated Southampton in a 4-4 draw at St Mary’s. Diogo Jota opened the scoring for the Reds in the 10th minute, with an assist from Romeo Lavia. Roberto Firmino doubled the lead four minutes later, with an assist from Fabinho. However, James Ward-Prowse and Kamaldeen Sulemana scored two quick goals to level the score before half-time. Sulemana then added his second of the game early in the second half, before Adam Armstrong put Southampton ahead. Liverpool responded with two goals in a minute, Cody Gakpo tapping in from inside the six yard box, and Jota scoring his second of the game from a Salah assist. Liverpool almost gifted a fifth for Southampton, Alexander-Arnold giving the ball away inside his own box.
The game was a mess with so little quality, a reminder of how bad Liverpool have been for most of this season, after some improved form over the last 10 games before it. Liverpool end the season in fifth place, on 67 points – the lowest in a full season under Klopp. James Milner was named TIA Man of the Match, and Darren England was the referee. Next season needs to be seriously better for Liverpool.
