Son Heung-min, the talented forward for Tottenham Hotspur and the South Korean national team, has recently become a year younger in his home country due to a change in the traditional age-counting method. This change in law, which was passed in December after strong campaigning from newly-elected Korean president Yoon Suk Yeol, has come into effect this week.
Under the original method of age calculation in South Korea, a person’s age included the gestation period for all babies. This meant that all individuals were counted as one-year-olds at birth. Additionally, citizens would become a year older on January 1, regardless of their actual birthdate.
However, with the new law in place, Son Heung-min’s age will officially change in South Korea. Born on July 8, 1992, Son has always been classified according to the international method since moving to England. Therefore, his age will remain as 30 years old in the UK.
It is important to note that this change in age will not affect Tottenham’s registration of Son as a player. The club will only need to provide an accurate date of birth for administrative purposes, rather than an age.
In addition to the change in age calculation, Son has also been the subject of transfer rumors linking him to a lucrative move to Saudi Arabia. However, he has made it clear that he is committed to Tottenham and has no interest in pursuing a move for financial gain. Son stated, “I have many things to do in the Premier League. Money doesn’t matter to me now, and the pride of playing football, to play in my favorite league, is important.”
