Former Crystal Palace owner Simon Jordan has dismissed claims that the ships on the badges of Manchester City and Manchester United are linked to the slave trade as a “remarkable leap”. The Guardian newspaper had argued that the ships represented the way in which the city made its money in the 19th century. However, Jordan said that the trade had been abolished 37 years before Manchester United created its badge and that there was no evidence to suggest that the badges were related to slavery. He added that he was tired of the past being used to “weaponise the present”.
