Michael Owen believes Chelsea have a ‘seriously good player’ in Enzo Fernandez and expects the Argentine midfielder to justify his huge price-tag at Stamford Bridge.

Fernandez has enjoyed a promising start to his Blues career following a record-breaking £107m move from Benfica in January.

The 22-year-old had only spent half a season at the Portuguese outfit but caught the attention of a number of clubs as he helped Argentina win the World Cup in Qatar.

Still, spending more than £100m on Fernandez and making him the most expensive Premier League signing in history raised some eyebrows, with a number of pundits suggesting Chelsea had overspent.

But former England striker Owen believes Chelsea have a ‘seriously good player’ on their hands and says he ‘oozed class’ during the goalless Premier League draw with Liverpool.

Chelsea’s underwhelming season continued on Tuesday night as the Blues were held to a 0-0 draw at home to Liverpool in their first game since Graham Potter’s sacking.

One of the few positives from the match was another assured performance from Fernandez, who was named Player of the Match by Manchester United legend Gary Neville.

‘In Enzo Fernandez, I think Chelsea have got a seriously good player,’ Owen said on Premier League Productions.

‘I know he cost an awful lot of money and I know people will be saying you should be good for that type of money.

‘But I think he is seriously good. He absolutely oozes class.’

While Chelsea have endured a dismal season and sit just 11th in the Premier League, Liverpool are also underperforming.

Jurgen Klopp’s side look set to miss out on a top-four finish, just 12 months after they won two trophies and challenged for a historic quadruple.

Assessing Liverpool’s performance at Stamford Bridge, Owen added: ‘I don’t think Liverpool played badly at all.

‘It’s just the standard that we’ve seen from Liverpool in recent years has been quite staggering. You are always using that as a barometer.

‘But they played fine. Yes, they conceded a couple of chances and Chelsea will be disappointed they didn’t score. But they also created a couple of chances themselves.

‘A few fresh faces came in and they have rested a couple of their star players that might be back for the big game against Arsenal at the weekend, so there are positives to take.’
