Sergio Aguero has defended struggling Chelsea caretaker manager Frank Lampard and backed him to play a key role in the development of one of the club’s new signings. On Saturday, Lampard secured his first win since returning to Stamford Bridge as Chelsea beat Bournemouth 3-1 to end a six-game losing streak. Lampard agreed to return to Chelsea following Graham Potter’s sacking but that appeared to be a questionable decision as he suffered six straight defeats and oversaw the Blues’ Champions League defeat to Real Madrid. Despite Chelsea’s struggles, Aguero has praised Lampard for returning at a ‘tough moment’ and says his presence will be of great use to Blues midfielder Enzo Fernandez. Argentina World Cup winner Fernandez became the most expensive signing in Premier League history when he completed a £107m move from Benfica in January, but the 22-year-old is taking a while to show his true ability in west London.
“Not many people get a chance to learn from the best,” former Manchester City and Barcelona striker Aguero told Stake. “I tried to do that during my career, and I’ve picked up teachings that I’ll carry with me forever. Frank Lampard’s experience will certainly be useful for Enzo Fernandez. He’s a great kid, and you can tell he wants to keep on growing.”
On Lampard’s underwhelming return to Stamford Bridge, Aguero added: “Frank clearly loves Chelsea. If you ask me, this love is what propelled him to the helm of the club in this tough moment. Very few people can shed off the funk and give it all for their team. But I believe he can, and that’s something that should be admired, despite the results. I wish Frank the best – he’s a great pro, and an even better person.”
Chelsea remain in the bottom-half of the Premier League despite their much-needed victory over Bournemouth and play host to Nottingham Forest on Saturday.
