Can the Seattle Seahawks Sustain Their Success Without a Strong Running Game?

The Seattle Seahawks have started the 2024 NFL season with a 2-0 record, but there are concerns about their reliance on the passing game. In previous seasons, the Seahawks often became overly dependent on quarterback Geno Smith and the passing game, which proved to be unsustainable against tough opponents. Despite some success, including eight game-winning drives by Smith in the past two seasons, the Seahawks struggled against playoff teams and were swept by the NFC South in 2022.

In their recent win over the New England Patriots, the Seahawks relied heavily on the passing game once again. Smith had more dropbacks than running back Zach Charbonnet had rushing yards, and while it was enough to secure the victory, head coach Mike Macdonald acknowledges that this approach may not always work. Macdonald emphasized the need to establish a strong running game, especially in critical situations.

However, the Seahawks’ running game has been struggling so far this season. They currently rank 31st in EPA per play on running back carries and 25th in yards per carry. The absence of running back Ken Walker III, who missed Week 2 due to an oblique injury, further complicates the situation. Charbonnet has faced difficulties due to poor blocking, often getting hit in the backfield before reaching the line of scrimmage.

One of the key factors contributing to Seattle’s struggles in the running game is blocking. The Seahawks rank 31st in run block win rate, hindering their ability to open up running lanes for their backs. Macdonald and his staff are aware of the issue and are working to address it. The right guard position remains unsettled, with Anthony Bradford and Christian Haynes rotating during games. Macdonald stated that while rotating guards may not be sustainable for the entire season, they will do whatever it takes to field the best offensive line.

Despite these challenges, the Seahawks have enough offensive firepower through their passing game to compensate for the lack of a consistent running game. Wide receivers Tyler Lockett, DK Metcalf, Jaxon Smith-Njigba, and tight end Noah Fant provide a formidable receiving corps that can make big plays. However, their success in the red zone has been limited, with only one touchdown on four trips inside the opponent’s 20-yard line.

While the Seahawks have the talent to win games through the air, they recognize the importance of a balanced offense. Relying too heavily on the passing game can make them predictable and vulnerable to strong defenses. The coaching staff is determined to establish the run game as their “bread and butter” to maintain long-term success. They understand the lessons from the previous regime’s struggles and aim to avoid repeating the same mistakes.

In their upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins, the Seahawks will face a defense that has allowed running backs to average 5.0 yards per carry. This presents an opportunity for Seattle to improve their running game, but they cannot solely rely on the Dolphins’ defensive weaknesses. They need to address their own blocking issues and find ways to create running lanes for their backs.

The Seahawks’ success this season will depend on their ability to strike a balance between the passing and running games. While the passing game has been effective thus far, they must establish a stronger ground attack to give their offense more versatility and reduce predictability. Macdonald and his staff are aware of the challenge and are working diligently to find their “sweet spot” in the running game.

As the Seahawks continue their quest for success in the 2024 NFL season, their ability to sustain their strong start will hinge on their ability to develop a reliable and efficient running game. By addressing their blocking issues, establishing a consistent ground attack, and maintaining a balanced offensive approach, the Seahawks can avoid falling into the trap of relying too heavily on the passing game. With their talented roster, they have the potential to become a formidable force in the league.
