Seattle Seahawks Dealing with Injuries to Top Running Backs in Training Camp
RENTON, Wash. — The Seattle Seahawks are facing some challenges during the first week of training camp as their top two running backs are dealing with injuries. Starter Ken Walker III is considered week-to-week due to a groin injury, while rookie second-round pick Zach Charbonnet has missed consecutive practices due to discomfort in his shoulder.
Coach Pete Carroll provided an update on the injuries after the team’s fourth practice of camp. He confirmed that Walker is week-to-week and emphasized the need to be cautious with his recovery. Although the injury is not severe, the Seahawks want to avoid any aggravation that could prolong his absence.
Walker had an impressive rookie season, finishing second in voting for AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. He rushed for 1,050 yards and nine touchdowns, establishing himself as a key player in the Seahawks’ offense. The team drafted Charbonnet with the 52nd pick to serve as their RB2, adding depth to their running back corps.
Carroll did not provide a specific timetable for Charbonnet’s return, stating that they will take the necessary time to evaluate his condition. The rookie’s shoulder discomfort appeared suddenly, without any specific incident causing it. The team is being cautious and conducting thorough examinations to ensure his long-term health.
In the absence of Walker and Charbonnet, fourth-year veteran DeeJay Dallas and rookie seventh-round pick Kenny McIntosh have seen increased reps during practice. Both players have an opportunity to showcase their skills and potentially earn a larger role within the team.
In addition to the running back injuries, left guard Damien Lewis missed practice on Sunday due to an illness. The Seahawks also received some positive news as tight end Noah Fant was activated off the Physically Unable to Perform list. However, other players on the PUP list, including safety Jamal Adams, cornerback Tariq Woolen, and linebacker Jordyn Brooks, are not expected to be activated in the near future.
Woolen, who had an impressive rookie season and made the Pro Bowl, underwent arthroscopic knee surgery in May. The team initially anticipated his return for the start of training camp, but his recovery has taken longer than expected. Carroll mentioned that Woolen is progressing well and participating in various activities, but it will still be a couple of weeks before he can fully join the team.
Adams and Brooks both suffered significant injuries last season. Adams tore his quad tendon in the season opener, while Brooks tore his ACL in Week 17. Neither player participated in spring practices, but they have been diligently working on their recoveries. Carroll expressed his satisfaction with their progress and praised their dedication to returning to the field.
The Seahawks are facing some early challenges in training camp with injuries to their top running backs. However, the team remains optimistic and is taking a cautious approach to ensure the players’ long-term health. In the meantime, other players are stepping up and seizing the opportunity to showcase their abilities. As the season approaches, the Seahawks will continue to monitor the progress of Walker and Charbonnet while preparing the rest of the team for a successful campaign.
