Elliot Anderson Receives First Scotland Call-Up
Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson has been called up to the Scotland squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Cyprus and England. Anderson, 20, from Whitley Bay, is eligible to represent Scotland through his grandmother from Glasgow. He has previously represented Scotland at youth level and made one appearance for the under-21s last year.
Anderson has made three substitute appearances for Newcastle in the Premier League this season and is now set to make his senior Scotland debut in the upcoming fixtures in September. Scotland are currently top of Group A in the Euro 2024 qualifiers with maximum points after four matches, and will be looking to continue their winning streak against Cyprus on 8 September in Larnaca.
Four days later, Scotland will host England at Hampden Park in a friendly match to commemorate the first meeting between the two nations in 1872 at Hamilton Crescent in Glasgow, which ended in a 0-0 draw and is officially recognised by Fifa as the first international match ever played.
Leeds United skipper Liam Cooper is missing through injury, while Celtic full-back Greg Taylor and Blackburn Rovers centre-half Dominic Hyam make way for the fit again pair of Nathan Patterson and Scott McKenna in the Scotland squad for the upcoming fixtures.
