‘Scarcely believable’ – Marcus Rashford and Erling Haaland compared as Manchester United and Man City prepare for huge derby

This weekend’s huge Manchester derby will see Marcus Rashford and Erling Haaland go head-to-head for bragging rights in the city.

Manchester United host Man City at Old Trafford – a match that’s live on talkSPORT – and it would take a brave person to bet on a 0-0 stalemate with the attacking talent on show.

Rashford has been in electric form for Erik ten Hag’s side in recent months, a run that started back in Qatar.

The 25-year-old managed to score three goals in five matches for England at the World Cup, before hitting the goal trail in emphatic fashion since returning to Manchester.

In six matches since his return, Rashford has scored a staggering seven times as well as providing three assists for his teammate as he cements his place as arguably the Premier League’s most in-form star.

It was just 12 months ago when Rashford’s future at Old Trafford was in doubt due to poor form, something that teammate Harry Maguire praised him for bouncing back from.

Speaking to talkSPORT during the World Cup, Maguire said: “I’m really pleased for Marcus. He has so much talent that I don’t think he’ll ever reach what his talent can get to. He’s so talented that he could be one of the best in the world and I think he should strive for that.”

He added: “Over the last year or so, it’s not just Marcus at Manchester United – we had a difficult year as a group and it affects people as individuals. This year he’s playing with a lot more freedom and a big smile on his face. We speak about him getting back to his best and I’m sure he will do.

“We’ve seen it this year. He’s become a lot more consistent with his goals and assists and he affects games. That’s the biggest thing. He’s always a goal threat. He’s always having chances.

“When chances are created in a game, a lot of them fall to him and that’s down to his movement and clever player. He’s a very talented boy and I’m pleased he’s back on track.”

Gabby Agbonlahor also discussed Rashford’s return to form, saying that it’s great to see him playing with a smile on his face again.

Agbonlahor said: “Everyone said it about Marcus Rashford last season, he wasn’t smiling when he went on the pitch.

“He didn’t look like he was happy to be playing. He looked like if you offered him two months to go and sort his head out like Jadon Sancho has, he would have taken it. He didn’t look like he wanted to play football.

“This Rashford that we see now, before the World Cup, at the World Cup and in the games after the World Cup, is a Rashford that is happy to play again.

“He’s taking four or five players on and enjoying himself. He’s scoring, he’s smiling and he’s celebrating. He’s got his connection back with the fans and it’s going to help Manchester United to reach their goals this season.”

In the blue half of Manchester, Haaland has needed no second invitations to hit the goal trail since moving to England.

Since arriving at City, the 22-year-old has bagged 27 goals in all competitions, including 21 goals in just 16 matches in the Premier League.

While there’s a lot way to go before he’s near Alan Shearer’s Premier League goalscoring record, the Newcastle legend has joked that he’d like to see Haaland head to Real Madrid before his record is at risk!

Speaking to Shearer on the talkSPORT Breakfast, host Laura Woods said: “If Haaland carries on scoring at this rate and plays the same amount of games as you did, he’s going to be on 662 Premier League goals.

“So, as a true professional and a man who has been in the business a long time… would you encourage him to move to Real Madrid?”

And he replied, jokingly: “It’s only a matter of time before he goes, isn’t it?”

One man who has loved watching Haaland is music legend Noel Gallagher.

A Man City fan, the former Oasis star says that Haaland’s achievements so far are ‘scarcely believable’ and says that the best way to stifle the attacker is by stopping the supply lines to the attacking star.

Speaking to talkSPORT Drive in October, Gallagher said: “I don’t think you stop him, you stop De Bruyne. You have to stop the ball getting to him.

“We’ve seen the goals that he’s scored already, some of them are scarcely believable – the one against Borussia Dortmund and his second against United – no other striker in the world even attempts that.

“We’re watching something that’s scarcely believable. To think that he’s nine goals short of last season’s Golden Boot title and there’s 30 games left, it’s a joke.

“You can’t see him going three games without scoring, you cannot see it.”

“Watching his movement is something else,” Gallagher continued.

“Even when he doesn’t get the ball he resets and goes again – you never see him throw his arms in the air. He is beyond the real deal.”

It remains to be seen whether it’ll be Rashford or Haaland that comes out on top on Saturday, but with both strikers in the form of their lives, it should make for a truly entertaining spectacle.
