Mohamed Salah Takes on New Role for Egypt, Jay-Jay Okocha Urges Honesty with Manager
Egypt’s opening game in the Africa Cup of Nations group stage against Mozambique has sparked discussions about Mohamed Salah’s performance. The 31-year-old scored a goal and provided an assist, although there is debate about the quality of his penalty and the intention behind setting up Mostafa Mohamed’s opener.
In this challenging match, Salah was deployed in a new position, almost as a No. 10. African football legend Jay-Jay Okocha, who was the top scorer and Player of the Tournament at the AFCON in 2004, has called for Salah to be honest with manager Rui Vitoria about his best role. Okocha emphasized that Salah is a player who must be closely monitored by any team facing Egypt.
Okocha stated, “It is up to the coach to find the best position for him to get the best performance and result. Salah is one of the greatest African players, and he should be honest with the manager and tell him which position suits him.”
While it is intriguing to see Salah used behind the striker, he is most comfortable on the right wing. Despite playing in a new role, Salah still has the freedom to drift towards the right wing, which comes naturally to him. However, there are suggestions that Vitoria is not fully maximizing Salah’s abilities.
Okocha also highlighted the pressure Salah faces in achieving success with his national team and emphasized the need for the team to learn from their draw with Mozambique and improve their results and performance.
In response to the draw, Khaled El-Darandaly, vice-president of the Egyptian FA, has revealed that a meeting has been scheduled for Vitoria to analyze the game with his players. This could be an opportune moment for Salah to express his tactical advice.
Overall, Salah’s new role for Egypt has generated discussions and calls for him to communicate openly with his manager about his preferred position. As one of Africa’s greatest players, Salah’s performance and success are crucial for Egypt’s national team.
