Buffalo Sabres Rookie Zach Benson Secures Spot on NHL Roster
BUFFALO, N.Y. — Buffalo Sabres rookie Zach Benson has received confirmation from General Manager Kevyn Adams that he will be playing his 10th game with the team on Friday. This means that the first year of his three-year contract will not be eligible for an entry-level slide, and he won’t be returning to the WHL. Despite the significance of this decision, Benson remains focused on helping the team win their upcoming game.
Impressive Preseason Performance
When the Sabres began their training camp, Benson was not considered a guaranteed player for the NHL roster. However, his exceptional performance during the preseason, where he recorded four points in six games, earned him a spot on the opening night roster.
Despite facing an injury early in the regular season, Benson has demonstrated his skills on the ice. In his first four NHL games, he recorded two points before being placed on injured reserve. Upon his return, he continued to impress, contributing points in each game of the Sabres’ recent three-game road trip. His highlight was his first NHL goal, a remarkable between-the-legs shot that gained attention on social media.

Sabres coach Don Granato commended Benson’s positional play and ability to force turnovers, highlighting his potential at just 18 years old. Granato emphasized that Benson’s consistency and proficiency without the puck were key factors in his inclusion on the opening day roster.
Promising Future
While the decision to keep Benson in the NHL for the entire season was challenging, both Granato and Adams believe in his ability to handle the demands of the league. Despite the inevitable ups and downs, Benson’s high compete level, intelligence, and situational awareness give him the tools to bounce back quickly.
Although the Sabres have the option to loan Benson to Team Canada for the World Junior Championship or send him back to junior hockey if needed, his strong performance with five points in nine games solidifies his place in the Sabres’ lineup. Skating alongside Casey Mittelstadt and JJ Peterka on the second line, Benson has showcased his versatility and ability to play with any teammate.
Looking ahead, Benson remains focused on learning and improving his game. As a young player, he embraces the opportunity to absorb as much knowledge as possible and contribute to the team’s success.
