Ryan Reynolds, Rob McElhenney, and Sir Alex Ferguson team up for Wrexham-Manchester United pre-season match in USA

Date:

Wrexham FC, owned by Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, have announced a summer friendly match against Manchester United. The match will take place on July 25 at the Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego, USA. The owners have been using their influence to grow the club and this match is expected to be a momentous occasion for the Welsh side.

To promote the match, Reynolds and McElhenney starred in a hilarious video with legendary former Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson. In the video, the two Hollywood stars are seen sitting down for a video call with Sir Alex. Before the chat starts, McElhenney claims Ferguson is the ‘greatest football manager of all time’ before Reynolds says he’s ‘super nervous’ and warns that Sir Alex is a ‘master intimidator’. Eventually, the Scotsman answers and the duo attempt to speak to Sir Alex, but a blank and stern stare greets them. Reynolds believes this is the 81-year-old’s attempt at ‘mind games’. The Deadpool star then suggests fans of both clubs are going to ‘love’ this proposed friendly in the United States. There is still no response from the ex-Aberdeen boss, and Reynolds ends the meeting by suggesting his co-owner has a hair appointment in Beverly Hills and that they have to end the call.

Reynolds and McElhenney are nervous in the build-up and Ferguson appears unimpressed throughout, leaving Reynolds and McElhenney baffled. Sir Alex isn’t too happy by the end, but it was all a misunderstanding. The Hollywood stars quickly end the chat and McElhenney states the conversation was ‘terrifying’ before the video switches to Sir Alex’s office. A woman enters and asks him how the call went, and Ferguson reveals that the Wrexham co-owners were on mute and that he never heard a thing.

The Welsh side will take on one of the biggest teams on the planet at the 35,000-seater Snapdragon Stadium in what should be a momentous occasion later this year. Reynolds and McElhenney will hope their players don’t get the same stage fright they got when speaking to Sir Alex.

This match is part of Wrexham’s efforts to grow as a club under the ownership of Reynolds and McElhenney. The Hollywood stars bought the club in February 2021 and have since been using their influence to promote the club and bring in new fans. The friendly match against Manchester United is just one of the many initiatives they have taken to promote the club.

Wrexham FC was founded in 1864 and has a long and storied history. The club has played in the English football league system for most of its history, but in 2011, it was transferred to the Welsh football league system. The club has won the Welsh Cup 23 times, making it the most successful club in the competition’s history. The club has also had some notable players over the years, including Joey Jones, Mickey Thomas, and Arfon Griffiths.

Reynolds and McElhenney are not the first Hollywood stars to invest in a football club. In recent years, several celebrities have bought stakes in football clubs, including Will Ferrell, who invested in LAFC, and Matthew McConaughey, who invested in Austin FC. These investments have helped to raise the profile of these clubs and attract new fans.

The friendly match between Wrexham and Manchester United is expected to be a huge event for both clubs. It will give Wrexham a chance to play against one of the biggest teams in the world and showcase their talent on a global stage. For Manchester United, it will be an opportunity to prepare for the upcoming season and test their players against a strong opponent.

Overall, this match is a testament to the hard work and dedication of Reynolds and McElhenney in promoting Wrexham as a club. Their efforts have already brought in new fans and raised the profile of the club, and this match is just one more step in their journey to make Wrexham a top-tier football club.
