England Women’s World Cup Dream Alive After Colombia Win
England’s Lionesses are one step closer to achieving their dream of winning the Women’s World Cup after a thrilling 2-1 win over Colombia in Sydney on Saturday. Lauren Hemp and Alessia Russo scored the goals which saw Sarina Wiegman’s side come from behind to secure a place in the semi-finals, where they will face host nation Australia.
The Matildas had earlier beaten France in an epic penalty shoot out to set up the blockbuster semi-final. Arsenal’s Russo is already relishing the prospect of taking on the home side, saying “It’s exciting, what more do you want? You want to play against the best teams and obviously they’re the hosts.”
Manchester City forward Hemp is also excited for the prospect of meeting the Australians, feeling full of confidence as England keep up their impressive run. “I feel as a group we’re in a really strong place at the moment, feeling really confident, so bring on Australia in a few days time,” she said.
The atmosphere in Sydney was incredible and it is sure to be even louder when England meet Australia next week. Hemp believes that this is when the team thrives and hopes that they will do the same in a few days time.
England are now just two wins away from achieving their dream of becoming Women’s World Cup champions. The Lionesses have been impressive throughout the tournament and have shown that they have what it takes to go all the way.
