# England Women Reach Historic First World Cup Final
England’s women’s football team have made history by reaching their first ever World Cup final. The Lionesses secured their place in the final with a 3-0 victory over Australia in the semi-final, with Alessia Russo scoring the decisive third goal.
The match was a tense affair, with England dominating possession but unable to break through Australia’s stubborn defence. However, the breakthrough came in the second half when Steph Houghton scored from a free kick to give England the lead. Ellen White then doubled England’s lead with a header from a corner before Russo sealed the victory with a powerful strike.
The result means that England will now face either the USA or the Netherlands in the final on Sunday 20th August. It will be the first time that England have reached the final of a major tournament since winning the European Championship in 2009.
## England’s Road to the Final
England’s journey to the final has been an impressive one. They began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over Scotland, before drawing 0-0 with Argentina in their second game. They then went on to beat Japan 2-0 and Cameroon 3-0 to secure their place in the knockout stages.
In the round of 16, they faced Norway and came from behind to win 3-0. They then faced hosts France in the quarter-finals and produced a stunning performance to win 2-1. The semi-final against Australia was another tough test, but England were able to hold their nerve and secure a 3-0 victory.
## England’s Star Performers
England’s success has been built on a strong team performance, but there have been some standout individual displays. Steph Houghton has been a rock at the back, while Ellen White has been a constant threat up front with her pace and movement. Lucy Bronze has been a revelation on the right flank, while Jill Scott has been a driving force in midfield.
Karen Carney has also been impressive, providing creativity and guile in the attacking third. And of course, Alessia Russo has made an instant impact since joining the team, scoring two goals in her first two appearances, including the decisive third goal against Australia.
## The Final Awaits
England now face an anxious wait to see who they will face in the final. The USA are favourites to reach the final after beating France in their semi-final, but the Netherlands will be hoping to cause an upset and reach their first ever World Cup final.
Whoever England face, it promises to be an historic occasion for the Lionesses. After years of disappointment, they now have the chance to make history by becoming world champions for the first time. The whole nation will be behind them as they look to make their dream a reality.
