The appointment of Russell Martin as the new manager of Southampton is facing delays due to a disagreement over when the club officially becomes a Championship team. The amount of compensation that Swansea City will receive for Martin’s departure will decrease once Southampton is no longer in the Premier League. Despite Martin agreeing to a three-year contract with the club, negotiations are ongoing to reach a compromise deal between the two sides.
In May, talkSPORT exclusively revealed that Martin was the leading candidate to replace Ruben Selles as Southampton’s manager. Martin will be the fourth permanent manager for the club in just 12 months, following Ralph Hasenhuttl, Nathan Jones, and Selles. Jason Wilcox, a former Blackburn player, was appointed as the club’s new director of football earlier this year, while Darren Mowbray has been named as the new head of recruitment.
Selles left Southampton at the end of his contract, and the club thanked him for his efforts during a difficult period. The Saints finished at the bottom of the Premier League table with only six wins throughout the season.
